ali abdul rahman darwish of the ras al khaimah siid he has turned his villa into an ARish or traditional home because he believes the younger generation has forgotten its glorious past in the quest for up-to-date technology it is therefore the duty of the older generations he feels to remind youngsters of their history and heritage and let them witness first hand the legacy of their ances-tors the heritage home rests on a foundation of eight palm trunks and is thatched with 1000 palm fronds typical of the homes of old inside it are items that date back hundreds of years -old drums pottery water pitchers 200 - year-old leather items guns and daggers food instuments and several exhibits that highlight the industry of ancient days darwish said he has tried to ensure that nearly all the items in his collection reflect those used by enrly nationals he said the ARISH was built with the help of an aged national saleh al kharkhor who has a wide reputation in this field the building itself took a month to complete he has for long considered turning his house into a little museum of early UAE life but only settled on it when he realion knew of their own bach ground the idea has been welcomed he said and large numbers have been visiting the heritage house already

darwish will personally

conduct visiting through the house and explain th significance of each item on display on one occasion said agroup of national women organised a UAE traditional night at the ARISH and cooked everything with tradition al utensils and implements and he will continue searching for and adding more thaditional items to his collection so that once a visitor enters the doorway he will be transported directly to the past he called on UAE museums to play a more active role in introducing youngsters to their history and heritage One positive outcome already he said was that many visitors to the ARISH have expressed a desire to set up similar houses he was willing to help them in every way
